81 www.ceotodaymagazine.com CEO Today Africa Awards 2017 TANZANIA MOHAMMED JAFFER Chairman of TanManagement Trust Mohammed Jaffer is one of the most well-known names in the Insurance Industry of Tanzania and throughout East Africa. Mohammed started his career working at the age of 19, having returned from graduating from The National American University (Affiliated with Skyline College/ University in Sharjah, UAE). He joined Jubilee Insurance Company of Tanzania Limited and worked his way up from an underwriting clerk to Regional Manager of the Company for the North of Tanzania. In his 8 year span with Jubilee Insurance, he started their operations on the Island of Zanzibar from scratch and grew their Northern office operations 3 times! All this whilst still under 27 years of age. Within this time he had joined the Rotary Club of Arusha, one of the oldest clubs in Tanzania and became its youngest ever President (and the Youngest ever in East Africa) at the age of 25 when the club entered its 50th year. He has held the prestigious Directorship for Eradicating Polio and Chair of Matching Grants under which he conducted projects worth over US$ 1,000,000 in assisting the community. In 2008, he joined MaxInsure Tanzania Limited as Vice-President of Business. Under his leadership, he established 5 offices for MaxInsure and grew the Company in 3 years to one of the top 10 Insurance Companies in Tanzania – making it the fastest Company to underwrite premiums of approximately $4.5m in its first year alone. After 3 years at the helm of MaxInsure, side by side the Managing Director, at the age of 30 he decided to venture into Insurance Broking and Consultancy – this was perhaps his true calling – his family bought into TanManagement Insurance Brokers Limited (previously TanManagement Insurance Agents Limited) which had a turnover of a mere US$150,000 or so and over the past 5 years has grown it into a $5,000,000 business! At the helm of TanManagement, he has led by example to grow a single office operation in one of the smallest towns of Tanzania to a multi-national operation through Mergers, Partnerships and Affiliations. TM now places risks for its clients in 10 Countries in East and Central Africa and has a potential reach of over 150 Countries worldwide! For his efforts in Rotary, he has been recognized by Rotary as a Major Donor (one of the highest recognitions of Rotary), he is a benefactor of Rotary (part of his will dedicated to Rotary) and continues with his passion for eradicating Polio through continuous fund raising for the Fight Against Polio – there is always a chance to see him wear his ‘Fight Against Polio’ pin when in his suit which he finds much more prestigious than his Major Donor and Benefactor pin which has a Diamond and Wings on it, in his own words he will always says; “I feel www.tm.co.tz much more connected to my Polio pin, once you have held a child in your hand and given him/her those 2 drops that you know will save their life, you will wear this pin proudly!” He has been featured on various Coverpages of Magazines in Tanzania and even on the International stage. He was featured on the coverpage of MAN MAGAZINE in Tanzania, the coverpage of The Insurance Times Magazine in Tanzania and featured notably in the MDS FULL COVER Magazine in Portugal amongst many other features and interviews. He is currently the President of the Brokers Association of Tanzania, Vice President of the Brokers Association of East Africa, Deputy President of The Insurance Institute of Tanzania and holds a Directorship position in Rotary Tanzania. His involvement in policy making in Tanzania is also very notable, having been a part of the National Insurance Policy (NIP) committee, part of the National Economic Empowerment Council (NEEC) under the Prime Ministers’ Office, part of various Insurance Day events and part of the Tax reform team for the Insurance Industry of Tanzania. He is currently the chairman of TanManagement Trust which assists to provide basic necessities of food, shelter and clothing to 8 orphanages in the North of Tanzania and you can always see him fundraising at events for the less fortunate. His passion and dedication to work is beyond doubt, you can never be surprised to receive an email from him at 4am or 11pm, in his own words, he says “My day starts when I wake up. I deal with people across the Globe so there is always someone to talk to no matter what time I wake up.” An active sportsperson who enjoys Golf, cycling and adventure, having Gorilla trekked in Rwanda, skydived in Portugal and is known in Tanzania to run in marathons and biathlons for supporting charity and fundraising. TM is ranked in the Top 10 Insurance Brokerage houses in Tanzania competing with the likes of Marsh and AON and has ranked in the Top 10 of the Top 100 Mid-sized Companies (turnover under US $20m) survey which has been conducted by KPMG for the past 3 consecutive years. He has also been recipient of the Tanzania Annual Young Professionals Award (TAYPA) and was inducted into the Hall of Fame as The Youngest Achiever of the Year by The Tanzania Leadership Awards.
